Youth4U – Young Inspectors is a national programme run by Look Listen Change; a partnership led by NCB that includes the British Youth Council, KIDS, NCB Residential Child Care and the Council for Disabled Children. The programme is currently being rolled out in over 30 areas with 904 young people involved. The young people are recruited and trained in their local areas to inspect their local services, which has proved to be a great way for the young people to be empowered in their local communities.
The young people chose which services they want to inspect and with the support of their local support workers they visit services such as police stations, youth clubs and health services. They then produce reports with recommendations on how services can be improved and become more youth friendly. After 6 months they revisit the services to see what changes have been made.
Abel, aged 15 from Islington said: "I can make a change to stuff, if something needs improving. If I talk to the right people I can do something about it. In the end we are the ones using it….and if we help them to get things right then everyone’ll benefit!"
