UK Youth Parliament election dates announced

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) has announced the dates for their 2010 elections. UKYP are encouraging young people aged 11-18 to stand as a Members of Youth Parliament (MYP). Elected MYPs get involved in campaigns and put forward the views of other young people to key decision makers. All MYPs also get to attend an Annual Sitting of the Parliament.

To become a MYP young people must be elected in an UKYP election. Constituencies are divided in Local Education Authorities (LEAs) the number of MYP elected from each region depends on the number of young people in that region.

The film features real young people telling inspiring true stories about how they got involved in the UK Youth Parliament and what they have achieved.
 

The elections are generally held annually between December and February and over 550,000 young people have voted in elections in the past two years.

Details of when elections take place can be found on the UKYP website or by contacting the Education Department at your local Council.

Amongst the campaigns UKYP are currently involved in include reducing the voting age to 16, abolishing University tuition fees and National Concession Card for reduced fares on buses for young people.
