Documentary Competition Launched for Young People

Mediabox and Channel 4 have launched the Fourdocs mediabox competition 2008. The competition gives 13-19 year olds the opportunity to win £500 to make a documentary and have it shown on Channel 4.

The competition is targeting disadvantaged young people who would not normally get the chance to make a film. Mediabox particularly interested in hearing from young people who find it hard to access positive activities and find things to do in their local areas and are seeking applications from young people that been excluded from school, are not in education, employment or training, are in care or have a disability.

To enter the competition young people need to think of an idea for a short documentary about something they care about and write 200 words about what they would want to make their documentary on. The best 10 ideas will win £500 to make the film over the summer holidays. Young people will need to be available during August to make the film.

The short listed applicants will then attend a workshop in London on the 24th and 25th July where they will meet with experts in filming to learn about techniques to produce their film. The competition winners will then work with a filmmaking mentor who will help them make their film. If under 16 a parent, or guardian will need to attend the workshop with them.

Experienced documentary makers, the Fourdocs team and Channel 4 will judge the finished films on the 24th September and the winner will be informed the following day.

Examples of winning entries from last year include a film about being young, creative and Muslim in Birmingham and a film by a young person about the murder of a student outside their school gate by another student.

The competition deadline is the 16th June 2008.
