The Children in Care Councils Consortium has published their first report on progress in establishing Children in Care Councils (CICCs) in England.
Children in Care Councils were first announced in the Care Matters white paper to provide a mechanism for children and young people in care to express their views and influence services.
The report brings together responses from 43 local authorities on their vision for children in care councils and activity undertaken so far and has been published by the Consortium to enable CICCs to share best practice.
The Children in Care Councils Consortium, which is made up of the National Centre for Excellence in Residential Child Care (NCERCC) based at the National Children’s Bureau (NCB) and Children’s Rights Officers and Advocates (CROA), has been set up to support the development of Children in Care Councils across the country. The consortium’s work includes providing a national CICC network, a website for sharing developments, a national conference which is being planned for this Autumn and the provision of accredited training for young people and professionals.
Speaking about the report Jonathan Stanley, director of NCERRC, said:
“The responses we have received so far indicate that in a large number of local authorities young people are engaging with their care workers and feeding back on how to improve the services they receive. This is a very positive development and we hope that the responses we have received will encourage other authorities to join the Consortium.”
