ACPO launch Children and Young People Strategy

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO); an independent, professionally led strategic body that leads and coordinates the direction and development of the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, has released its children and young people strategy. In the strategy the ACPO promise to “engage and listen to the voices of children and young people in shaping our services.”

This document will be made available to all police forces throughout England & Wales and provides guidance for individual forces that are either looking to or in the process of developing local level strategies for children and young people.

One of these objectives states that the ACPO aim to “Improve the satisfaction and confidence of children and young people in their police service. This is to be delivered through enhancing the quality of our contact, working together with young people to earn their trust, and understanding how policing interventions can impact upon their life opportunities.”

The ACPO have identified a number of objectives which form part of a wider objective for the police to contribute to enhancing the life chances of children and young people as outlined in Every Child Matters and 7 Core Aims in Wales which aim to put children’s rights (as detailed in UNCRC) into practice.

The objectives covered in this strategy include:

  • Engaging and listening to the voices of children and young people in shaping police services.
  • Increasing confidence and satisfaction in the police service amongst children and young people.
  • Reducing crime and disorder in which children and young people are victims, witnesses or offenders.
  • Reducing the unnecessary criminalisation of children and young people through using effective enforcement when justified, necessary and proportionate.
  • Actively engaging with partners in providing a co-ordinated and comprehensive approach to delivering services for all children and young people.

The document also includes a self assessment framework to assist police forces in measuring their own progress against the key areas outlined within the strategy.
