Regional Networks
East of England PWNE Conference February 06

On 23rd February 2006 over 100 Participation Workers from across the Eastern region met together for a conference dedicated to exchanging best practice in children and young people’s participation. This conference was organised by the Participation Workers Network for England and launched the East of England regional network.

The day began with a showing of the recently produced PWNE DVD ‘they help you get respect’, featuring children and young people’s views from around the country about getting their voices heard and being involved in decision-making.

Chris Hilliard, Director for Children and Learners for the East of England, inspired delegates with a keynote address detailing his vision for the children and young people of the region.

Delegates attended workshops showcasing good practice examples from around the region such as Suffolk Connexions Participation Strategy and Interactive Methods for involving younger children from Cambridgeshire Children’s Fund.

At the end of the day the future for the regional network was discussed. There was a clear need for more networking and sharing to take place in the region and delegates welcomed this developing in a more coordinated and regular way.

There was much interest in the small steering group which directs the activity of the network and the first meeting of this group took place at GO-East in March 06. The regional network in particular has benefitted from having meetings take place on an alternate basis at GO-East and the open invitation to GO-East staff to come along and find out a bit more about children and young people’s participation in the region and how they can get involved.
