London Participation Conference June 05

On Monday 13th June 05, over 150 delegates met at City Hall in London to share ideas and methods around children and young people’s participation and network with each other.

This event was supported by the GLA, Government Office for London and co-organised by a multi-agency steering group and the PWNE.

Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron urged those present to work together to respond properly to children and young people’s needs in the capital. Key priorities in the Mayor’s strategy, following consultation with young londoners, are for more and safer play areas and Nicky Gavron outlined how the GLA was working with Government Office for London, the Met Police and other London public bodies to deliver these outcomes. She acknowledged that the huge experience and skills which London Participation Workers can offer will be very helpful in shaping what children and young people need.

Other speakers included London Regional Change Advisor Frank McGee and Imran Saithna from the Muslim Youth Helpline.

Workshop themes throughout the rest of the day were as follows:

It’s not just down to me! – Mainstreaming participation in your organisation
Every Child Matters – participation in children and young people’s plans
Is everybody here? – Ensuring diversity in participation.
So what’s changed? Measuring the impact of children and young people’s participation
Young people and community change.
Participation A-Z – an inspirational walk through the basics of children and young people’s participation.

Young People from Newham Children’s Rights Service, Lambeth Youth Council and Refugee Youth gave an inspirational insight to the world of Participation from their point of view at the end of the day.

The Young Londoners Website was also launched by the GLA in June 05. The website provides young Londoners with information about the governance of London, sources of information and advice about issues that affect them, an opportunity to give feedback on Mayoral policies and a platform for their voice and experiences. http://www.london.gov.uk/young-london/
