Participation Workers Network for England

Welcome to the PWNE

The Participation Works Network for England (PWNE) exists to provide opportunities for adults for whom participation is part of their daily work, to network, share new ideas and learn more about the participation landscape.

Membership of the network allows you to access information on the latest news, events, resources and exciting opportunities for you as well as children and young people and is free to join. The PWNE is open to all people who support or facilitate the involvement of children or young people in decision-making or democracy as a significant or specific part of their job. One of the most useful things about the PWNE is the on-line membership database which you can access to enable you to network with other members.

Why was it introduced?

The need for a Participation Workers Network was first recognised and recommended in the 2002 Carnegie UK Trust report Circus Skills by Kylie Kilgour. You can download a copy of the report here (PDF)

Through consultation, Kilgour found that many Participation Workers were demanding more opportunities for training, support and development in their professional lives. Many surveyed were also isolated and lacked opportunities to share practice with others. She concluded that one way of achieving this was through a national network.

Since 2004 with funding from the Department for Education and Skills and hosting and support by the Carnegie UK Trust, a National PWNE Coordinator post has existed and the PWNE has developed greatly. The PWNE has operated an on-line membership database of over 1300 members, run a number of events, supported several regional networks, and developed a popular fortnightly e-bulletin. Recently the PWNE moved to be part of an exciting new Big Lottery funded project ‘Participation Works’

How is it organised?
