Children and Young People Tell Us How They Feel About Their Lives In New Survey

Ofsted have published their annual Tellus3 survey of almost 150,000 children and young people aged 10 to 15 years old in England. This is the second year that the survey has been carried out.

 

The purpose of the survey is to find out how children and young view their lives including how healthy they are, how safe they feel, if they enjoy school, if they are happy and how good local authorities are at providing services for young people. The questions in the survey reflect the five Every Child Matters outcomes priorities.

 

The key findings from the survey, which was carried out during spring this year, are that a large majority of children and young people are happy, healthy and feel safe in their school and local areas. However almost half surveyed worry about their future and bullying is still a concern along with smoking, drinking and drugs.

 

When asked about whether they were happy 69% of children and young people from the survey said they are happy and 95% said they have one or more good friends. The survey found that 8% of children and young people are unhappy about life. When asked what worried them most 57% said exams, 49% said my future and 32% responded that they are worried about their body. More than a third of children and young people also wanted better information and advice about sex and relationships.

 

The survey asked children and young people about being healthy. 58% said that they are very healthy most of the time and 28% quite healthy most of the time. When asked if they had ever taken drugs 11% said yes and 86% said no. 75%had never smoked a cigarette and 11% had smoked cigarettes only once or twice.

 

The survey also asked children and young people about how safe they feel from being hurt by other people. 47% said they feel quite safe, 28% said very safe and 55 said very unsafe. 27% also worry the most about bullying. 39% said they had never been bullied at school.  When asked about how well their school deals with bullying 28% said not very well and 14% said very well.

 

When asked whether they enjoy school 43% said they enjoy school sometimes, 42% said most of the time and 7% said never. The survey asked children and young people to choose from a list of things that might help them do better at school. 81% said more fun/interesting lessons, 39% said more help from teachers and 34% said smaller classes or groups.

 

Children and young people were asked about how much their views are listened to in decisions about their local area. 37% said not very much, 22% said a fair amount and 4% said a great deal.  When asked of their views about their local area as a place to live in 43% said it was fairly good, 32% said very good and 4% said very poor. The survey found that in the last year 61% of 10 to 15 year olds had given their time to help a charity, local voluntary group or an individual in their local area.

 

The survey also asked children and young people questions about things to do and services in their local area. When asked about things that would do the most to make their area a better place to live 48% said if it was cleaner and had less litter and 44% said better sports clubs and centres.  Children and young people were also asked to choose out of a list of options things that would make their life better. 22% said more places where I can go to spend time with my friends and 11% said better school lessons.
