New Youth Panel To Advise Government Department

The Department for Communities and Local Government have recruited a new team of youth advisors to represent the views of young people.

The young advisors will work with Communities Secretary Hazel Blears on a range of issues including supporting vulnerable young people, regenerating run down areas and building safer communities for young people to live in.

The Department’s two new youth advisors will meet with Hazel Blears on a monthly basis to give the perspective of young people on policy issues dealt with by the department that impact upon young people. A panel of seven other young people who will meet with Hazel Blears every three months will support the youth advisors.  The youth advisors will be responsible for feeding back to and discussing issues with the rest of the panel in between meetings.

The youth panel will enable young people to influence Government decisions that affect young people. The panels have been established following the publication of the White Paper, Communities in Control this Summer which set out proposals to put more power into the hands of local communities and younger people to enable them to influence and shape decision making over local services. Other proposals in the White Paper included setting up a programme for young people to ‘shadow’ Government ministers and elected mayors and internships with councillors for young people.

The two youth advisers are Jacqueline Macaulay from Southwark, London, (age 19), and Rory Birch from Heywood, Lancashire, (age 20). The panel members are aged between 15 to 20 years old and are from across the country. Hazel Blears picked the two advisors and seven panel members from the national pool of 300 Young Advisors who work nationally to advise decision makers on engaging young people in the life and regeneration of their communities.

Speaking about his appointment as youth adviser, Rory said, “I am very pleased to be on the panel of youth advisors with the experience of making a difference locally. It will now be interesting to see what difference we can make nationally…. It’s important for young people to have their voices heard as we have our own views on how things are and our opinions will shape the future. Young people are human beings like everyone else and deserve an opinion.”
