Report Recommends Greater Investment in Participation

The Speaking Out initiative, a partnership between the National Council of Voluntary Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO) and National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) have produced a report called Every Organisation Matters which maps the  children and young people’s voluntary and community sector.

The voluntary and community sector makes up 2.2% of the total workforce which is just over 600,000 paid staff and has an annual income of £28 billion. The report recommends greater support for smaller organisations and for further research into the children and young people’s voluntary and community sector.

Chief Executive of the NCVCCO Maggie Jones commented:

"The voluntary and community sector makes a real difference to the lives of many millions of children and young people, and the Government has recognised how central the sector is in achieving the aims of the Children’s Plan and the broader agenda of community empowerment."

The report also looked at the voice of children and young people within the voluntary and community sector and found that involving children and young people is “taken very seriously” in some areas and that some organisations are keen to promote children and young people being “active citizens”.

Every Organisation Matters  also argues that there should be greater investment in participation training to help organisations help involve children and young people. Amongst larger organisations there is a need to “explore how participation could be linked into accredited programmes of skills development for young people.”

The report also points to the advantage of having staff experienced in using participation when applying for funding.
