Fund Opens For Organisations To Support Young People To Influence Decision-making

Third sector organisations will be able to apply for funding to deliver projects to involve young people in decision-making that affects them through the Innovation Fund, launched today by the Ministry of Justice.

The £150,000 Government scheme is aimed at charities, community groups and non governmental organisations and awards grants of up to £15,000 to support projects that are developing new ways to help people to get involved in discussing public issues and influencing Government policymaking.

Speaking about the Innovation Fund Democracy Minister Michael Wills said, “Active participation is essential for a healthy and vigorous democracy. Through the Innovation Fund we are looking for new and interesting ways to get people engaged in the political life of their community.”

This is the third time that grants have been made available under the Fund, which was originally launched in 2006. Up to ten proposals will receive £15,000 to trial a new or different technique or method for engaging people in democracy and influencing policymaking.

Previous projects that have won funding under the scheme to involve children and young people in policymaking include the “mPower” project which developed a website designed for 14-16 year olds to post their views on political issues and find out what other young people in their area think by uploading their own content and the UK Youth Parliament Joint Surgery Initiative which set up 12 joint surgeries across the UK that brought together MPs, members of the UKYP and young people to increase young people’s understanding of democratic institutions and raise the profile of young people’s issues. Another successful project was the English Secondary Student’s Association Citizen’s Juries In Schools project which trialed citizen’s juries in schools to provide students with the opportunity to become actively involved in the democratic process in a school environment and in decision-making that affects them. The project also involved the production with young people of a set of resources on running citizen’s juries.

The criteria for applying for the Fund include that the project must assist people to discuss public issues and influence government policy-making using online tools, face-to-face events or a combination of approaches. The projects being proposed must also trial a new or different technique or apply an existing technique in a new way.

The deadline for applications is 4pm on the 26 September 2008. Decisions will be announced in October.

Organisations interested in applying for the grant are invited to float their idea for a project on the website for the Innovation Fund. Other organisations can view the idea on the website and post comments and also submit their ideas before submitting a full application. You do not need to discuss your idea before submitting an application though this is recommended.
