Young Partners Award 2008 Has Opened

Nominations have opened for the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) Young Partners Award 2008.

The purpose of the Young Partners Award is to celebrate young people’s involvement in decision-making within voluntary and community youth organisations and projects. The awards enable organisations and projects that work with young people to showcase what can be achieved by working in partnership with young people.

Young people are in the driving seat with the planning and delivery of the Young Partners Award. The awards criteria have been developed by young people based on their own experiences of involvement in decision-making. Young people are responsible for carrying out short-listing of nominations and visiting short-listed organisations. As well as deciding who the winners are young people also plan the award ceremony.

Speaking about the awards young people from the Young Partners Award planning group said, “The young partners award is a scheme that values young people’s opinions and contributions to their youth organisations. We achieve this by visiting, presenting, short listing and rewarding them. The outcome of this is allowing young people to have a voice and express their opinions to a wide range of people.”  (Linda, Lillith, Katie, and Laura age 13, YPA planning group.)

The award is open to all voluntary and community organisations and projects that work with or for young people aged between 11 and 25 years. The winners will be short-listed in three regional and one national category and there will be one winner in each category.

The award criteria includes that young people have involvement on their own terms and at all levels of decision-making, their involvement has led to results and that their input has made a difference and that young people receive recognition with credit where due, feedback and reward where appropriate.

The winners will receive a certificate and invite to the Young Partners Award ceremony taking place on Saturday 13 December 2008 in London to receive their award and have the opportunity to find out about youth participation going on across the country and to publicise their organisation or project.

Anyone can nominate an organisation to win the Young Partners Award. For further information on the YPA contact Steven Pryse at steven@ncvys.org.uk or telephone 020 7278 1041. The deadline for nominations is Friday 19 September 2008.
