‘Runners’ Scheme Gives Pupils Jobs

A north London primary school has developed a scheme to support its pupils to achieve economic well being (one of the Every Child Matters five outcomes) by giving them jobs to help in the running of the school.

‘Raynham Runners’ is the title given to pupils at Raynham primary school who successfully apply for jobs at the school, which include planting and watering plants, recycling and reading to younger children. Pupils have to undergo a formal recruitment process, which includes filling out an application form and choosing the job they would like to do. They then have to undergo a formal interview with two staff members and if successful they receive a letter of appointment and a badge.

Sharon Gepp, the pastoral officer at Raynham School, coordinates the scheme.

Speaking about the scheme in the Guardian she said, “Runners do make a genuine contribution…especially to the appearance of the school, but of course it’s also a great way for us to help them build their confidence and capability.”

Speaking in the Guardian, Anjuman, aged 10, a pupil at Raynham school whose job is PA to the medical officer said, “You take it seriously because you’re responsible for something.”
