National Group to Enable Young Muslims To Speak To Government

A new national group for young Muslims to enable them to have a say on issues that affect their lives is being set up by the National Youth Agency.

The NYA is being supported by the Government to recruit 20 young Muslims aged 16 to 21, male and female, to form the Young Muslims Advisory Group (YMAG).

The purpose of YMAG is to enable young people to influence decision-making by having a direct dialogue with Government policymakers on the issues that are important to and affect the lives of young Muslims in England. The NYA are looking for young people who are ‘tomorrow’s leaders, thinkers, speakers and visionaries’.

The young people recruited to the new group will be given direct access to Ministers and policymakers to shape the policymaking agenda and influence Government policy. They will voice the aspirations and concerns of young Muslims and generate new ideas to bring about positive change and tackle issues identified through consultation with young people. The group will also have the chance to organise and lead a national Youth Conference in 2008.

A free three-day residential will be held on the 27-29 August 2008 after which 20 young people will be selected from across all regions of England to form the YMAG. They will be provided with expert training in specialist fields including media and presentation skills. The group will be supported to take on peer leadership roles in their communities and to develop projects for Muslim young people to enable them to give their views using film and other types of media.

Speaking about the establishment of the new group Rod Norton of the National Youth Agency said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for young Muslims to get their voices heard. We want to create a group of individuals that reflect the diversity of Muslim communities in this country and give them the chance to bring about positive change.”
