Guidance Published on Promoting Young People’s Participation in Decision-making

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has published new advice on how to get young people involved in decision-making in their schools.

The revised guidance ‘Working together: Listening to the voices of children and young people’ promotes children and young people’s participation in governance in their schools, local authority and wider community and gives advice on how to support young people’s involvement.

The Guidance brings together best practice on involving pupils in decision-making taking place in schools and local authorities across the country.

Areas highlighted for getting young people involved in decision-making include consultations with children and young people on issues raised by them and as part of the decision-making process and young people’s forums and school councils where pupils can get involved in decision-making on school policies and represent the views of their fellow pupils. The Guidance also looks at the use of peer mentoring schemes which include older children providing support to younger children helping them with reading or pupils being trained to act as mediators and support other pupils who have experienced bullying.

Best practice examples featured in the guidance include the Four Dwellings High School in Birmingham, which has developed pupil participation in school improvement through Teaching and Learning Discussion Groups. Through the discussion groups’ pupils are involved in reviewing the school’s Improvement Plan with teachers.

Speaking about the guidance Professor Geoff Whitty, Director of the Institute of Education and author of ‘Real Decision Making? School Councils in Action’ said, “We hope all schools will involve young people in the decisions that affect them. The updated guidance provides real life examples of how to do this, ensuring that young people are supported in making a positive contribution to their school and local community.”
