UKYP Vote For National Campaigns

The UK Youth Parliament took over the House of Lords on Friday 2nd May to debate and vote on the 3 national campaigns that will be the main focus for the UKYP in 2008 and 2009.

Prior to the debate UKYP asked young people to take part in an on-line poll to decide the six campaign ideas that they wanted the Members of the Youth Parliament to discuss. 300 MYPs from all across the country descended on Westminster to debate the 6 issues voted on by young people. The 6 campaign ideas discussed were:

• National public transport concession card for young people under 18
• Abolishing university fees
• Single age at which young people are deemed to be an adult
• Fair and accurate representation of young people in the media
• Lowering the voting age to 16
• Recycling and the environment

After voting using a 1st, 2nd and 3rd preference system (with 3 points given to the first preference, 2 to the second and 1 to the 3rd) the 3 campaigns that were chosen by the MYPs for this year are as follows:

• Recycling and the environment (490 votes)
• National public transport concession card for young people under 18 (425 votes)
• Abolishing tuition fees (252 votes)

Speaking about the debate Umar Kankiya, London Region Coordinator for the UK Youth Parliament, said:

"The event was truly amazing. The young people came together and showed to everyone that they are passionate about the issues that have been voted on, and this year will continue to see them making positive strides and ensuring that the issues that they voted on are heard and acted upon by all.”
