myplace opens today

myplace, the Government’s £190 million capital grants programme for youth facilities, opens for applications today.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families funded programme, which is being administered by the Big Lottery Fund, will give out grants of between one and five million pounds to deliver youth facilities to ensure that young people have safe places to go to take part in positive activities. The active participation of young people forms a key part of myplace and organisations bidding for funding have to demonstrate that young people will be actively involved in designing and delivering projects.

Speaking about myplace, Beverley Hughes, Minister for Children, Young People and Families said, “We want to put young people in the lead, giving them a real say in delivering safe and high quality places for them to go-places they can call their own and that give them a chance to take part in a wide range of sports, dance, music and arts activities.”

Local authorities and charities working with young people in England can now  bid for the funding.

The deadline for fast track applications is the 29 July 2008 and the deadline for the standard route is the 30 September 2008. Application and guidance materials for the first funding round are now available on the Big Lottery Fund website.
