Government announce £6million to support young leaders

The Government has announced £6million of new funding over three years to empower and develop young leaders. The funding will establish a new national body for youth leadership to champion and support youth leadership.

By 2018 the Government wants more young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds to be empowered to lead action to address problems faced by other young people and be recognised for their work and the benefits to society.

The new national youth leadership body will spread good practice on developing youth leadership programmes and act as a critical friend to the Government. It will also help identify barriers to youth leadership and work with the Government, business and community leaders to tackle them and act as an advocate for young leaders to influence national and international policy. The new body will be a virtual organisation and the Government wants to work with ‘dynamic and innovative youth leadership organisations’ to develop young leaders.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families  policy document, 'Young People: Leading Change' published last week  identifies gaps to building youth leadership which include lack of provision, third sector organisations struggling to access funding to develop youth leadership opportunities and negative perceptions of young people.

A Youth Leadership Fund will be set up to build the capacity of third sector organisations to improve participation of young people from disadvantaged communities and increase opportunities for them to get involved in youth leadership.

Announcing the new funding, Young People’s Minister Beverley Hughes said:

“Our young people have enormous leadership potential. They passionately take the lead on highlighting and tackling issues of concern to us all – whether it is climate change, the environment, or local issues like regeneration and local services."

"Such young leaders provide positive role models for their peers and their communities and not only help counter the widespread negative and destructive image of teenagers, but can also bring together communities.”

Other strands of work the new body will undertake include the launch of a national ‘Young Leaders’ campaign to celebrate best practice from youth leadership and showcase the achievements of young people that have championed causes through annual celebration events and developing and promoting a programme of internships to enable young people to engage with local councillors and understand and value their role with the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Proposals on how the investment will be delivered over the three years to 2011 will be published in the early summer.
