Participation Works Take Over Day!

The Participation works core team office was ‘taken over’ on Friday 23 November as part of the first ever 11Million Takeover Day.

The purpose of Takeover Day was to give children and young people the opportunity to work in a host organisation and be responsible for carrying out the duties of the staff member whose role they took over. There was an emphasis on children and young people making decisions on current projects being worked on. The day also provided the opportunity to celebrate young people’s contributions in society and for young people to gain new skills, knowledge and experiences of leadership.

Two young people spent the day working with members of the Participation Works team in London: Emrys, 17 and Ellie, 19. Participation Work’s staff members worked with Emrys and Ellie, providing support throughout the Day.

Planning for Takeover Day included explaining key roles and areas worked on by PW staff and then asking Ellie and Emrys what particular areas of the Participation Works programme they wanted to work on.

Emrys, who is an IT whiz, chose to work on the Participation Works Gateway and Ellie, who has lots of facilitation experience decided to work on the Participation Works Network for England.

Emrys and Ellie were asked what they hoped to influence and learn from the Day. Emrys wanted to learn more about the Gateway and Ellie wanted to learn more about kitemarks and influence the use of the media.

Key activities Emrys got involved in on the Gateway included testing out the new blogging feature being developed. Emrys came up with some brilliant ideas for new interactive features for the Gateway including developing customised areas on the Gateway for Participation Works Network for England (PWNE) The PW Team found Emrys’s input very useful and has asked Emrys, who, along with Ellie is a member of the Participation Works Young People’s Advisory Group, to lead on testing out a new bulletin board feature with other advisory group members.

Ellie, who works part-time for the National Youth Agency as a trainer/facilitator (including Participation Works workshops) and for UNICEF on youth participation, worked on the upcoming PWNE Participation Kitemarks National Event, being held on 5 December, in London. Ellie carried out research into kitemarks currently in use and developed the workshop questions and a brief for the chairperson, which will be used at the event.  Her input was very useful and gave PWNE staff a fresh perspective on kitemarks.

At the end of the day both Emrys and Ellie participated in a feedback session with PW staff. The best part of the day for Emrys was learning about how the Gateway works. Speaking at the end of the day, Emrys said, “It has been interesting and useful. I have learnt how the PW Gateway works”.  Ellie enjoyed learning about kitemarks. Ellie said, “It was really interesting and I got to influence a conference workshop.”
